AMBIENT AIR QUALITY MONITORING

With the increased industrial and commercial activities in the vicinity of major cities, the quality of the ambient air is being affected by emissions from the industries and from the ever increasing vehicular population. As per the provision of Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981, the entire state of Tamil Nadu has been declared as an air pollution control area.

AMBIENT AIR QUALITY MONITORING PROGRAMME AT CHENNAI

         
Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board is operating eight ambient air quality monitoring stations in Chennai under National Air Quality Monitoring Programme (NAMP).

The eight ambient air quality monitoring stations in Chennai are:-

(i)            Kathivakkam              - industrial area

(ii)          Manali                         - industrial area  

(iii)        Thiruvottiyur                - industrial area

(iv)         Kilpauk                       - commercial (traffic inter-section)

(v)      Thiyagaraya Nagar    - commercial (traffic inter-section)

(vi)     Vallalar Nagar            - commercial (traffic inter-section)

(vii)     Anna Nagar                - residential area

(viii)    Adyar                          - residential area

  All the above stations are functioning on 24 hours basis, twice a week. The samples collected from NAMP stations are analysed for the Respirable Suspended Particulate Matter (RSPM)  (RSPM is particulate matter less than 10 microns) and gaseous pollutants such as Sulphur di oxide (SO2) and Nitrogen di Oxides (NO2).

The National Ambient Air Quality Standards prescribed is given below:

AMBIENT AIR QUALITY MONITORING IN THOOTHUKUDI, COIMBATORE, SALEM, MADURAI TRICHY, CUDDALORE AND METTUR.

            At Thoothukudi, ambient air quality stations have been functioning under NAMP from the year 1988 in the following locations.

(a)       Raja Agencies          -           Industrial zone

(b)       SIPCOT                    -           Industrial zone

(c)       A.V.M. Building         -           Mixed zone

            At Coimbatore, the ambient air quality stations have been functioning under NAMP from the year 1991 in the following locations.

(a)       District  Collector’s Office         -         Mixed zone

(b)       Ponniyarajapuram                    -         Residential zone

(c)        SIDCO Building                       -         Industrial zone

            At Salem, the ambient air quality station has been functioning under NAMP in the following location from  1996 onwards in the following station.

(a)       Sowdeswari College               -           Mixed zone

            At Madurai, the ambient air quality stations have been functioning under NAMP  from  1996 in the following locations.

(a)       Highways Project Building                         -          Residential zone

(b)       M/s.Susee Cars and trucks Co., Ltd.        -           Industrial zone

(c)        Madurai Corporation Office (SZ)              -           Mixed zone

           At Trichy, the ambient air quality stations have been functioning under NAMP from 2012 in the following locations.

(a)      Gandhi Market                    -          Commercial zone

(b)           Main Guard Gate                -          Traffic intersection

(c)            Bishop Heber College         -           Mixed zone

(d)          Golden rock                         -           Residential zone

(e)        Central bus stand                -           Traffic intersection

        At Cuddalore, the ambient air quality stations have been functioning under NAMP from 2013 in the following locations.

(a)      Echankadu Village            -        Residential Zone

(b)      DEE Office                        -        Commercial Zone

(c)      SIPCOT                             -        Industrial Zone

        At Mettur, the ambient air quality stations have been functioning under NAMP from 2013 in the following locations.

(a)     Raman Nagar                      -      Residential Zone

(b)     SIDCO                                  -      Industrial Zone

All the above monitoring stations under NAMP are functioning on 24 hours basis, twice a week.
